OUR approach to Therapy with Adults

Our approach in therapy is warm, active, goal- directed, and solution focused. You have likely arrived at the desire for therapy because you are wanting both compassionate support and real change in your life. Together we create a safe, supportive space where you can share and explore how you truly feel and what has been holding you back from living the life you want. As your therapist, we will also be there to suggest strategies and recommendations and help you build the skills and tools needed to gain more fulfillment in your life. We will help you be accountable to your own life and to making the changes that will best serve your well-being, purpose and life dreams.

 

What you cAN Expect in therapy

In our first session, we often start by identifying what you would like to be different in your life. You may share various symptoms that are causing suffering and distress. There may be life changes you are seeking but are unclear what the steps are to achieve them. You may know what direction you want to move but are seeking accountability and tools to make those shifts.

Together we look at the changes you are hoping for and start identifying your life goals that we can strategically work towards. We will determine a clear plan that will help you move towards your goals.  Often a variety of skills and tools are instrumental in enabling such movement. For instance, one may need to develop a more positive self- image, learn assertive communication skills, manage stress more effectively, or gain clarity on what one wants in life. As movement is made in the right direction, together we learn what is working and how to sustain the positive change.

If you are experiencing unwanted symptoms, such as depression or anxiety, we initially focus on decreasing symptoms to reach a healthy and comfortable emotional state.  Clients typically feel relief within a couple initial sessions. We will utilize treatment interventions that focus on shifting unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviors that often cause or exacerbate unwanted symptoms. Once relief has been gained, we shift to sustaining the change by targeting various life patterns that tend to trigger symptoms. We may create prevention action plans to catch symptoms early when they are easiest to manage and learn to respond quickly and effectively to return to our desired emotional state.

Our practice offers individually tailored plans that draw from the following transformative tools:  cognitive- behavioral therapy, mindfulness based therapy, insight oriented therapy, nature immersion therapy, life design services, walk and talk therapy, meditation, spirituality and sports psychology.  Based on your needs and interests, we create the optimal path for your desired change.

When distress and symptoms are present and immediate relief is needed, cognitive behavioral therapy is often used to alleviate styles of thinking and acting that are causing and exacerbating suffering. So often, irrational negative thoughts become our inner reality and cause unwanted emotional reactivity. Once symptom relief is maintained, mindfulness based therapy and meditation practices can help us gain direct access to the joys in our everyday life. We often find ourselves distanced from the present moment, habituated to a style of reliving the past or planning for the future and rushing to the next task. Mindfulness and meditation practices can help us regain an immersion in the present moment and the joys that are always here for us. Insight oriented methods are also utilized to gain awareness of long standing patterns that have repeated in different chapters of our lives that need healing and release. Life design services enable us to identify and achieve lifestyle changes that help us live the best version of our life on a daily basis. A unique service our practice offers is nature immersion therapy. Sessions are held in nature to allow for a deeper connection and healing to be gained with the natural world.  Nature is a portal to perspective, presence, connection, joy and a world outside of our mental worries.
